Winter Walks- Enjoy a series of winter walks exploring our local public parks. These walks are free and do not require registration. The walks will be held as long as it is safe and the roads are open. Walkers often bring a light snack to share at the end of the walk. The winter hikes are co-sponsored with Story County Conservation and led by an Outdoor Alliance volunteer.
There are also two winter presentations: Iowa’s Lost Lichens, by Biologist Dr. Jim Colbert; and, Stream Ecology, by Ecologist Dr. Amy Burgin. Both presentations are at the Ames Public Library at 515 Douglas Avenue at 7pm. The library will also have a Zoom option. These presentations are co-sponsored by the Ames Public Library and Story County Conservation and are free, open to the public and do not require registration.
Winter Walk- Thursday, January 1, 2026, 1:30-3:00pm at Carr Pool: We will meet at 1610 Meadowlane Ave, Ames. This is the site where the former Carr Pool was located.
Winter Walk- Thursday, January 8, 2026, 1:30-3:00pm at Robison Wildlife Acres: Robison Wildlife Acres is at 29490 632nd Avenue, Maxwell IA 50161. We will begin our walk from the parking lot at 1:30. A walking stick or poles may be appropriate since the trail includes steps and slopes.
Winter Walk- Thursday, January 15, 2026, 1:30-3:00pm at East Peterson Park: The address is 55756 180th St. Ames. Go to the back area to park. All walks and departures are from the meeting area and begin at 1:30 PM.
Winter Walk- Thursday, January 22, 2026, 1:30-3:00pm at Ronald "Dick" Jordan Family Wildlife Area: We will meet in the parking area on the NE side of the South Skunk River bridge at 56091 265th Street, Ames.
Winter Seminar- Saturday, January 24th, 2026- Iowa Prairie Networkhosts a day long series of presentations, conservation displays and a silent auction. The seminar will be at Ames High School, 1801 Ridgewood Ave, Ames. Details will be posted as they are finalized Iowa Prarie Network.

Presentation- Thursday, January 29, 7:00pm at Ames Library: Iowa’s Lost Lichens. Join Dr. Jim Colbert on a journey to a world filled with lichen, often a splash color on rocks, trees and pretty much wherever we are. Jim is a retired Iowa State University biology professor. Jim also made a splash as one of the founders of the Skunk River Navy removing tons of trash from local waterways.
Presentation- Thursday, February 26, 7:00pm Ames Library: Stream Ecology. Join Dr. Amy Burgin as she talks about waterways, including the Story County waterways that we depend upon. Amy’s research findings have been published in numerous articles and is reflected in a number of national awards. A brief annual meeting follows.
