2025 WINTER EVENTS: The new year starts off with a series of winter walks on Thursday afternoons in January. There are also two winter presentations: In January, Ames resident Hank Kohler will guide us on his paddle down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. In February, Mike Cox, Directory of Story County Conservation, will lead us across the county on a tour of recent projects, on-going projects and plans made possible by the bond referendum passed by the voters in Story County last fall.
Both presentations are at the Ames Public Library at 515 Douglas Avenue, will have a Zoom option and are co-sponsored by the Ames Public Library and Story County Conservation. These events are free, open to the public and do not require registration.
WINTER WALKS: Shake off the holidays with a walk on Thursday afternoons in January as we explore our local parks. All walks begin at 1:30 from our meeting area and wrap up by about 3:30. We end our walks sharing a light snack brought by the hikers.
Yes, it can be cold and windy; icy, wet or muddy conditions are possible too. Layering with wicking clothes, wearing a wind and water resistant jacket, gloves and hat, using ski poles, a walking stick, cleats for your shoes or even snowshoes can be useful depending on conditions.
The walks are open to the public, free and do not require registration. The winter walks are co-sponsored with Story County Conservation and are led by an Outdoor Alliance of Story County volunteer. The winter walks will wrap up earlier if the winter weather is particularly harsh and will be cancelled if Story County Conservation closes its facilities due to the weather.
